When its storming in the mountains what do you do? Head to the beach! With five days between shows we figured it was about time to let our feet wade into the Atlantic Ocean. Granted the beaches of North Carolina are in no way en route from Charlotte to Winston-Salem. We admittedly detoured a long way off, but thought it was worth the drive.

The story of the lost colony of Roanoke is a tale that can grasp your imagination and intrigue just about everyone. Where did the 100 colonists go? Was there foul play involved? Did the Native Americans have a hand in the disappearance, for good or bad? What does the words “Croatoan” carved into the post of the fence mean? If you’re a history buff like myself this tantalizing real life mystery will drive you crazy.

The Outer Banks are a pretty unique place. Harsh and unforgiving at times while idyllic and serene at others. Our four days spent on her beaches taught us this much. After a long drive East the first day we set up camp among coastal dunes that we hoped would shelter us from the blustery winds. Although we were tucked in closely behind a twenty foot dune, the wind some how managed to glide over the hill of sand to only gain momentum as it cascaded down the backside and slam directly into our Sylvan Sport Camper. Throughout the night the relentless wind increased and sideways rain was added to the assault we endured. Our earplugs only partially alleviated the screaming angry storm. I went to sleep being jarred from side to side reliving the winter I worked aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean.

The second night held the same horrendous punishment, but thankfully the storms abated for the third and fourth giving way to a pleasant time spent exploring the barrier islands of the Outer Banks.

Binge drifting is a way of life for us. Since we met in 2008, we have worked seasonally in 10 different states, driven across this amazing country of ours countless times, hiked from Mexico to Canada, bicycled from coast to coast, and traveled the world. We hope you enjoy these tales of our journey chasing adventure!
