| Living in a swamp… Not sure how people do it. The Cypress and Southern Live Oak trees are pretty out of this world, but still there are no mountains. And the mosquitos, ugh. But then there is Bourbon Street, Jazz music and Mardi Gras. And creole food, oh yeah! Every place in the country has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, its goods with the bads. And then there is New Orleans… Or N’awlins, or Nawlins, or New Awlinz or whatever… One thing is for sure is that there is no place like New Orleans. |
Looking for an ideal way to experience this lively town, mixed with some good ol’ southern history, we thought a bicycle tour would be a perfect place to start. A google search and quick scan of reviews led me to FreeWheelin’ Bike tours. Our raspy voiced, fiery tour guide Laura led our way through the pot-holed, cobble-stoned gritty backstreets of New Orleans. Standing at about four foot six inches she was an energetic creole, born and raised in the racy city; loud and proud. Wow could she pedal that bicycle! Like a skilled sheep herding dog she whizzed up and down the street corralling our eight person group through congested intersections and along busy boulevards. Stopping us every couple blocks she’d point out a historic building or share insightful and entertaining banter about the city she clearly loved. Every block we passed she waved and hollered at a friend who was either busily on their own way or doing some good porch sittin’. Seeing New Orleans on two wheels was an intimate and enthralling way to experience one of America’s most unique cities. |
