Earlier that week we had a conference call with our publicist (we have a publicist, how crazy is that?!) going over the media brief for our television segment. The point of this meeting was to clarify what we would be speaking about during the 90 second to 3 minute interview. Before this meeting I felt completely confident. I had pictured the interview going smoothly, we’ll say hi explain who we are, explain what the Get Out More Tour is, then thank them for having us and invite everyone at home to come to our show that evening. Bada Bing, Bada Boom! Easy enough right? Wrong. This media brief had broken down our entire presentation into 3 minutes, in which we were suppose to describe specific gear, clothing, give backpacking advice and even touch on leave no trace responsible hiking. They have to be crazy! There is no way all this can be crammed into a 3 minute spot. It would be challenging enough to cover one of these topics in a 3 minute interview let alone all of them.
Arriving at the studio in the early morning hours we arranged our gear up on the sound stage and waited for our moment in the spot light. Our publicist had promised us the interview would not be live. It was most definitely live. Right before the cameras were about to roll Becky looked at me and said, “I can’t be sure what will come out of my mouth, so I’ll have to heavily depend on you”. Then when the camera started she immediately stole all my lines! The whole interview only lasted a brief four minutes. And in the end it was more like what I expected, we described what the tour was and who we were including our backpacking history. We touched on a couple of the backpacking essentials including specific gear and invited everyone to join us at our show tonight.
