With no way of obtaining cash once the journey has begun, if two people are walking into the Himalayan Mountains and will be gone for 30 days; how much money do they need to carry with them to adequately supply themselves with services such as: shelter, water, food, guide services, trekking and park permits? The answer Becky and I found to this question was $2,000 US. Which works out to be right around 202,120 Nepalese Rupees. That's a staggeringly uneasy amount to have on your person in any country, let alone in an unfamiliar third world country where the annual GDP per capita is only 151,590 Nepalese Rupees ($1,500 US).
A stack of bills two inches thick is hidden in Becky's bag, a similar stack is hidden in my bag, another large stack of bills is folded and placed in a hidden pocket I'd sewn on the inside of my pants before we left the US for this purpose, a small amount is in Becky's pocket, and the amount we intend on spending each day is in my front pocket. Wish us luck!!!
Not a single moment the whole time we were in Nepal did we feel threatened. It is a country filled with wonderful people and of course majestic mountains.
