DAY 15
Booneville, KY to Berea, KY

The two angry dogs approached from the left. They ran across their yard before continuing into the street. This is the moment I became concerned. 90% of these aggressive Kentucky dogs that we have encountered will chase you along their property line, but not set foot onto the street. These two clearly meant us harm. My air horn was secured to the bungie cord on my back rack. I had become efficient at quickly grabbing it without turning my head. Having grabbed the horn in fear and anticipation many times in the past week without having to use it, today I was itching for the opportunity. It's not that I want to deafen or hurt a dog, but if blows come to blows...

The dog closes in on its prey (us), four feet... three feet...two feet... I press the blue plastic button on the air horn. A slight hiss then fizzle leads to a muffled sad squeal. I almost laugh, or maybe it was the dog that laughs and keeps coming. I try again with slightly better results. The compressed air freezes my hand and gives off an ear shattering sound. Our assailant pauses for a brief second, which allows us to drift past.

We awoke before day break. A light layer of dew covered us and all our possessions. After suffering in the suffocating heat and humidity of the past few days, we've learned the earlier we start, the more enjoyable the ride. 49 miles to Berea, a college town of nearly 15,000 people. We'll be staying with a woman by the name of Kara. She lives in a red brick house with her four wonderful boys on the outskirts of town. This is the third day in a row that Kentucky has been less than friendly towards us while on our bikes, but over the top accommodating during the evening. Kara opened up her home and family to us. She chauffeured us around town in her car, and entertained us with her sarcastic sense of humor, which she has passed on to her quick witted, intelligent children. Thank you Kara, Karmadri, Kijyane, Kadrioan, and Kairey.

Binge drifting is a way of life for us. Since we met in 2008, we have worked seasonally in 10 different states, driven across this amazing country of ours countless times, hiked from Mexico to Canada, bicycled from coast to coast and traveled the world. We hope you enjoy these tales of our journey chasing adventure!
