DAY 29
Cassoday, KS to Nickerson, KS

Speaking with my mom the other day, she had voiced her concern as to when we were going to start enjoying ourselves. If It doesn't come through in my writing as to how much fun we are having, I'm sorry. The truth is, a lot of things Becky and I do in life have a miserable side to them. It's only by fully enduring these negative sides of experiences can you appreciate the uniquely amazing sides of these adventures. Anyway, I'll try to be lighter and express the joyful parts of this horrible experience. Just kidding :).

Another early morning
Picture
Cowboy camping (sleeping under the stars without a tent) the night before, we had just closed our eyes as a vibrant full moon rose in the east. A few short hours later when we awoke to begin our day, this same bright moon now hung over the western horizon guiding our way. We would need this light, being that when we rolled away from the city park in Cassoday, it was only 5:00 am and the sun wouldn't rise for another hour. The reason for the early start was to avoid the vicious winds Kansas is known for. Strengthening winds as the day progresses was the forecast.

It's the Law
Four weeks into our cycling adventure, you would think ones ass would be fully adjusted to the rigors of sitting on a bicycle seat countless hours a day. In fact I had felt like our asses were hardened, then came Kansas. Kansas is it's own beast. You don't go up, you don't go down, you simply go straight. Normally a variety of terrain will give you the opportunity to shift into different riding positions, allowing for rest periods. Kansas is ass torture as you're forced to sit in basically the same position all day long. At least 10 times a day, one of us will break riding formation and scream, "my ass!" at the top of our lungs. Kansas has broken us both mentally and physically.

This is Becky's 'my back hurts really bad pose'
After four days and nights of being on our own isolated from the group of cyclists we'd been around for weeks, it was time to reunite. Dirty B and Carson took a short day into Nickerson and were awaiting our arrival. It was good to see friendly faces after enduring some sketchy nights alone. Safety in numbers, this should be the cyclist motto while traveling through Kansas.
Stats:
Miles: 91.02
Average speed: 12.9 mph
Max speed: 22.4 mph
Odometer: 1908 miles

The Nickerson city park had a water park… or cyclist shower?!

Binge drifting is a way of life for us. Since we met in 2008, we have worked seasonally in 10 different states, driven across this amazing country of ours countless times, hiked from Mexico to Canada, bicycled from coast to coast and traveled the world. We hope you enjoy these tales of our journey chasing adventure!
