DAY 35
Pueblo, CO to Royal Gorge, CO

A racer cruises by us in the opposite direction. We accept the wave he gives in lieu of conversation. This guy barely has time to sleep, let alone to pull over and speak with us. The race across America via the Trans America Bicycle Route began June 7. Just in the past week have we begun to see these extreme cyclist crazies. The winner in past years finished in just over two weeks. In order to do that, these people are averaging hundreds of miles a day. Crazy! I know that a lot of folks view Becky and I's life as a little out there. That maybe we have a screw or two loose. Well, I'd like to say that we are completely within the realm of normal. These crazy people who push themselves past the breaking point are the true nut jobs.

Hills are so much better than flat and windy!

Mountains, we're coming for you!
As we pedal down the rolling prairie of the dry Colorado foothills, we're both giddy with excitement. To a degree we feel like we're home. Home in the sense of the mountains and home in the sense of the West. The saying is true, there's no place like home. Yeah, we were excited to explore the foreign lands of the East, but the excitement which now radiates from us about the upcoming mountains dwarfs those emotions.

The day is spent climbing over small hills only to fall back down the other side. What a feeling it is to effortlessly coast downhill. A feeling we haven't experienced in over a week. A very long, flat mind numbing week. We don't even overly mind the uphill. Ok, we'd rather just have downhill, but anything other than flat and windy. The land is parched and rugged. Cacti litter the shrub land. Bright yellow flowers bloom from some, while others show off a vibrant pink. It's unimaginably quiet. At least in comparison to the roar of the constant wind of the plains. Today is also a big day because we say goodbye to highway 96. This road carried us over 330 miles from Eastern Kansas to the mighty Rocky Mountains. We're not going to miss it.

Binge drifting is a way of life for us. Since we met in 2008, we have worked seasonally in 10 different states, driven across this amazing country of ours countless times, hiked from Mexico to Canada, bicycled from coast to coast and traveled the world. We hope you enjoy these tales of our journey chasing adventure!
