Mountain air and music!!! What more can one ask for? For the past two and a half months at each of our Backpacking clinics in addition to inspiring and motivating people to Get Out More, we also promoted and gave away a three day pass to one of the coolest music festivals in the East. Located in the mountains above Floyd Virginia along the Blue Ridge Parkway sits a beautiful meadow among rolling hills, hollows and surrounded by lush mountain vegetation. Once a year these meadows erupt with musical bliss! The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the spine of the Appalachian mountains and in my opinion is one of the prettiest scenic drives east of the Rocky Mountains. For the most part it is an unassuming narrow mountain road that winds up and over ridges as it makes its way North from North Carolina to Virginia. The Parkway spends as much time going East and West as it does going its true route North and South. The founders of this music festival couldn’t have chosen a prettier place to hold this event. Our role in this weeks festivities include maintaining a booth where we showcase our sponsors gear and interact with folks interested in hiking and backpacking. We also led two short hikes in the surrounding hills near the festival grounds. On occasion during the day one of us would sneak off to watch a band we were keen on. Luckily, manning our booth didn’t keep us from the opportunity to listen to music as there was a smaller stage directly to the front left of us. We were entertained all day by either the lively music or even better the great people watching that ensues at every festival. Our favorite musicians from the week were Swampcandy and Annabelle’s Curse…check them out!!! | Everyone familiar with and or who had attended this event before had nothing but great things to say. In fact most people raved about the festival and some we met had been loyal attendees all fourteen years of it’s existence. Having never been to FloydFest ourselves Becky and I had been expectantly looking forward to this festival all summer. |
