Being that it is the 4th of July with the heightened paranoia that is the world we live in today, both Becky and I’s parents warned us to be careful while in the City. I agree that it is always smart to be vigilant while in highly populated areas, especially during holidays. But when more than one person has warned you, plus you start seeing warnings on the news, your mind can start to worry. If we let terrorists influence or even worse, dictate what we do, then they have won even if in a small way. You can’t live your life scared.

With the weekend holiday absent of any shows, the Get Out More team was free to spend the time relaxing. Ironically what we ended up doing turned out to be the least relaxing thing we could possibly think of!

One of my best friends who I grew up with in Seattle is an executive chef at a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. Although we are not city people and most of the time would prefer to avoid the concrete jungle of large cities, this 4th of July we chose to celebrate our countries Independence Day with 8 million other people.

Our first night in the city we completely unloaded all of our gear out of the Subaru into my friend Nathan’s apartment so we didn’t have to worry about it overnight in the car. We dined at his restaurant where he spoiled us with calamari and mussels to start and then braised lamb over pasta and a whole Dorado for two. Seriously if you are ever in Brooklyn check out his restaurant Prospect. The food and atmosphere were spot on and it was located in an active lively neighborhood.

The walk across the Brooklyn Bridge was one of the highlights of the weekend and of course the Women’s National Soccer Team taking home the trophy! In the end the weekend was both relaxing and hectic! And most importantly safe without a mention of a terrorist attack. AMERICA!!!

On Saturday we got up late because we had spent the previous evening catching up and reminiscing about our high school glory days. The agenda for the day included a visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island before a 4th of July BBQ at one of Nathan’s friends. Seriously the best and only way to visit and truly experience new places is with a personal guide, i.e. a local friend.

Binge drifting is a way of life for us. Since we met in 2008, we have worked seasonally in 10 different states, driven across this amazing country of ours countless times, hiked from Mexico to Canada, bicycled from coast to coast, and traveled the world. We hope you enjoy these tales of our journey chasing adventure!
